Ironman, here we come!

Fuel

I try to eat well most of the time (except for Tuesdays…I will not give up my Tuesday Night Wing Night!), but it’s a week before the Chicago Marathon, and that means it’s time to really pay attention to what I’m eating. This week is going to be one long stretch of carb-loading, balanced out by all of the other nutritional goodies I need to kick some serious ass in this race.

Nutritional goals for the week:
Eat a decent amount of carbs all week - not just on Saturday night (especially whole grains)
Cut out most of the fats - except for wing night, of course!
Eat enough protein - I think I’ll treat myself to a steak or two
Stay hydrated - this includes cutting out caffeine
Sleep well - ok, maybe it’s not really related to food, but I need to remind myself!

On the subject of food…
Breakfast is, hands down, my favorite meal of the day. I guess I really listened in elementary school health class, eh?

Today’s brekky:

brekky

A 3-egg (but only 2 yolks) cheese omelette and 2 slices of multi-grain toast, plus a couple of glasses of V8 Splash and a banana. Eggs for protein, toast for carbs and fiber, juice/fruit for assorted nutrients (including potassium in that banana). I opted out of the completely egg-white omelette today, but I’ll probably be ditching the yolks as the week goes on.

I’m going for a short run (5K) tonight with the roommate while dinner marinates. She just went on a little spree at the Nike store and got some running clothes…we might have a convert here! Bet I can get her to run the Chicago 1/2 Marathon next fall.

That reminds me…I need some good shorts for the race. It would be super ideal if I could find some with pockets or something, so I could stow some shot bloks and a gel or two. Actually, I’m lying about the gel. Gels are gross. Too bad they don’t taste like breakfast food!
